Repair or replace your AC in Lake Mary, Florida
Work them in order. How old is the system? What does the repair cost against a replacement? What refrigerant is in it? And how many repairs has it already taken this season? In the City of Lake Mary the median house was built in 1996 and a quarter were built in 1988 or earlier, so most local systems are already second-generation equipment. The refrigerant question settles most borderline cases: a failed R-410A outdoor unit cannot be matched to a new R-454B one, so a condenser or compressor failure usually becomes a whole-system decision.
What the appraiser’s data says about Lake Mary systems
A 1996 house is thirty years old. It is very unlikely to be on original equipment; it is quite likely to be on its second system, installed somewhere in the 2005–2015 window, which puts that system in the replacement conversation now. A 1988 house at the 25th percentile has almost certainly been through two.
Do not guess from the house. Find the manufacture date on the data plate of the outdoor unit — it is usually encoded in the serial number — and use that. Then look at what has been done to the ducts, because a 1996 attic duct system that has never been touched is a separate line item and a large one.

What the numbers tend to look like in this market
| Work | Reported range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic / service call | $70–$200 | National range; commonly credited toward the repair. |
| Capacitor replacement | $80–$400 | Installed. Around $175 is the figure most often cited as typical. |
| Compressor replacement | $1,200–$2,800 | Higher on larger systems. Usually the point at which replacement is worth pricing. |
| 3-ton AC condenser + air handler | $9,000–$12,000 | Florida-specific, dated 8 April 2025. |
| 3-ton heat pump + air handler | $9,500–$12,500 | Florida-specific, dated 8 April 2025. |
| Orlando metro, 1,500–2,500 sq ft home | $7,500–$10,500 | Wider envelope of $5,800–$15,500 reported across the same guide. |
| Duct replacement, added on top | $2,500–$6,000 |
Researched market estimates gathered on 6 September 2026 from third-party cost guides (hvac.com Florida replacement guide dated 8 April 2025, Angi Orlando install guide, HomeGuide, This Old House) and one publicly advertised Lake Mary competitor price list. These are not our prices, they are not a quote, and they are not verified against any Lake Mary invoice. Ranges from commercial cost-guide sites run wide for a reason.
The usable rule from those figures is proportional, not absolute. A $400 capacitor on a nine-year-old system is maintenance. A $2,400 compressor on a fifteen-year-old R-410A system is most of a new matched system that carries a fresh warranty and a current SEER2 rating — and it leaves the rest of a fifteen-year-old machine in place.
Get three written quotes and compare them line by line rather than by the total. That is what the comparison checklist is for.
R-410A is not banned, but it has stopped being a free choice
EPA’s Technology Transitions programme set a 700 GWP limit for new residential and light-commercial air conditioners and heat pumps, with a manufacture-and-import compliance date of 1 January 2025. That is why new equipment ships on R-454B and R-32 instead of R-410A, whose GWP is around 2,088. EPA states there is no installation compliance date for systems whose components were all manufactured or imported before that date, so legally built R-410A stock can still be installed.
What that means for a repair decision: your existing R-410A system can still be serviced and charged. But a mixed-refrigerant match is not a thing. If the outdoor unit fails, you cannot bolt a new R-454B condenser onto your R-410A coil, so the failure of one large component tends to force the whole decision. And as R-410A production is drawn down under the HFC phasedown, its price is the variable to watch on any large recharge.
R-454B is A2L — mildly flammable — which changes line-set, leak-detection and service requirements. That is a reason to ask what your contractor is installing, not a reason to avoid it.
The Duke Home Energy Check has to come first
A free Duke Energy Home Energy Check must have been completed within the previous 24 months to qualify for any Home Energy Improvement rebate. Replace the system first and apply afterwards, and the claim is denied.
For an emergency replacement Duke allows the Home Energy Check to be completed within 12 months after installation. That is the exception, not the plan. If your system is limping rather than dead, book the check now, while you still have the option. Almost no contractor page in this market mentions this in time to be useful.

| Amount | For | Efficiency required |
|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | Replacing electric strip heat with a heat pump — higher tier | 16.8 SEER & 9.0 HSPF, or 16 SEER2 & 7.5 HSPF2 |
| $600 | Replacing electric strip heat with a heat pump — high tier | 16.0 SEER & 9.0 HSPF, or 15.2 SEER2 & 7.5 HSPF2 |
| $500 | Replacing an existing heat pump | 16 SEER & 9.0 HSPF, or 15.2 SEER2 & 7.5 HSPF2 |
| $300 | Replacing an existing air conditioner | 16 SEER, or 15.2 SEER2 |
These are the amounts Duke Energy publishes on its Home Energy Improvement HVAC replacement page. That page is not scoped to a single state — its body references the Carolinas, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and Florida. The Florida application portal confirms the programme and the Home Energy Check prerequisite apply to Duke Energy Florida, but no Florida-scoped statement of these specific figures was located. Rebate amounts change without notice; check Duke’s page rather than this one.
One more thing before you plan a budget around the top tier. The $1,000 amount is for replacing electric strip heat with a heat pump. Only 26.9% of parcels in the City of Lake Mary tax district were built between 1970 and 1989, the window when straight-cool plus electric strip heat was standard, and many of those houses have already been changed out at least once. In Lake Mary the top tier is the exception. Check what heat type you actually have before you count on it.

Why the answer differs by subdivision here
The City of Lake Mary’s housing does not age as one block. Cardinal Oaks Cove has a median build year of 1988 and 87.3% of its parcels built between 1970 and 1989; Fountain Parke at Lake Mary Phase 2 has a median of 2016 and none. On the same errand you can be talking about a third-generation changeout on one street and a first repair on the next. See build years by subdivision.
One caution specific to this city: only 26.9% of parcels fall in the 1970–1989 window when straight-cool plus electric strip heat was standard, and 34.6% were built in 2000 or later. The largest Duke rebate tier is the one for removing strip heat, so in Lake Mary that tier is the exception, not the rule. Check what heat you actually have before you budget around a rebate.
The question, in the wording people ask it
Should I repair or replace my AC unit?
Work the four questions in order: how old is the system, what does the repair cost against the replacement, what refrigerant is in it, and how many repairs has it already had this season. In the City of Lake Mary the median house was built in 1996 and a quarter were built in 1988 or earlier, so a great many local systems are second-generation equipment now reaching their own end of life. The refrigerant question is the one that decides most borderline cases: a failed R-410A outdoor unit cannot be paired with a new R-454B one, so a condenser or compressor failure usually becomes a whole-system decision whether you wanted it to or not.
These questions are the verbatim wording used on live pages that rank for Lake Mary and Florida air-conditioning queries. They are evidence of how the question gets typed, not a capture of Google’s People Also Ask box.
